Animal Shelter Programming & Schematic Design  Various locations  
Programming and schematic design helps clients determine the size of and estimate the cost for building new shelters or additions. Graphics shown are samples of renderings developed during the schematic design phase of a project.

Berkshire Humane Society Shelter  Pittsfield, MA  
The Berkshire Humane Society shelter includes kennels constructed with glazed block walls, seamless resinous flooring and a high pressure, hot water cleaning system. The exterior finishes include a standing seam metal roofing system, cultured stone and vinyl siding. Visitors have access to all adoption feature areas from the lobby, which reduces the need for a staff escort. A surrender lobby separate from general reception is provided. The upstairs meeting room and large downstairs training area have separate entrances enhancing facility use for after hours programs. Collier County Domestic Animal Shelter  Naples, FL  
This new shelter is located in Naples in SW Florida. The Collier County Domestic Animal Services Department won the animal control agency of the year award for 2002 from the Florida Animal Control Association. Photos show lobby, adoption kennel, horse stable and sign. See PDF photo album.

Conceptual Design for New Animal Shelter    
The conceptual design done originally for a new Sarasota County, FL, animal shelter is in the Mediterranean Revival style and includes a central courtyard. The project was not constructed.

Cuyahoga County Kennel  Valley View (Cleveland area), OH  
New, state-of-the-art county kennel serving the greater Cleveland, Ohio area. Oregon Group Architects based in Dayton, OH, was the associate architect. See photo albums in PDF format.

Grace Pavilion Wellness Center  West Palm Beach, Florida  
Bacon Group is the architect of record for this new adoption and veterinary services facility. The new facility is a two-story medical wellness building (total 38,000 SF) including animal adoption features, administrative space and a live-in apartment. The wellness center includes a full service veterinary hospital with exam rooms, three surgery suites, pre & post op areas, recovery and holding areas, radiology suite, and laboratory. Included are a zoned HVAC system to prevent cross contamination and durable and impervious finishes allow sanitation. Site design, new parking and landscaping and extensive permitting were included. The client is the Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League / Humane Society of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Humane Society of Kent County Shelter  Grand Rapids, MI  
A sizable donation by the construction company helped keep this new shelter's cost down. Photos show the wall-mounted engraved stainless steel food bowls used to note significant support for the project, kennel, cat mall and lobby view. See PDF photo album.

Kent County Animal Shelter  Grand Rapids, MI  
Bacon Group was the animal shelter design consultant contracted to a locally-based architect in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The new shelter is 22,384 SF with a construction cost of $4.2 million, including a 6.4% contingency. Post occupancy, the county encountered problems with the resinous flooring installation and utilized Bacon Group to assist with diagnosing the problem and recommending a solution for re-application. (Note: In a separate project, Bacon Group also provided architectural design for the Kent County Humane Society, also located in the Grand Rapids area, which opened in 2001.)

Lubbock Animal Services  Lubbock, Texas  
Bacon Group is the architect of record partnered with Minnix Commercial Construction to design and construct a new animal shelter for the City of Lubbock, Texas, utilizing a design/build project delivery method. The facility holds 128 cats and 64 dogs. The adoption area for cats features outside views for the powder-coated steel cat condos, a free-roaming socialization room and a get-acquainted room. Dog kennels are structural glaze block with Tri-star stainless steel caging through-out. The structure is load-bearing walls with built-up roofing; the exterior finish is split-face block with a store-front glass system. Support areas include sally port, exam room, grooming, food storage and prep, laundry rooms, ACO dispatch, squad room, locker rooms and showers, and euthanasia room with cold storage. The project underwent value engineering by the contractor and design team to reduce the construction cost. Some items removed include the sprinkler system and landscaping, commercial laundry equipment and glazed face block except for the kennel runs.

Metro-Nashville / Davidson County Animal Control Shelter  Nashville, TN  
The Animal Care and Control Facility was the first design/build project undertaken by the Metropolitan Nashville/Davidson County government. The project was delivered on time and within budget. Bacon Group served as the shelter design consultant to the local D/B team.

Miami-Dade County Animal Control  Miami, FL  
Bacon Group is partnered with LIVS a Miami-based architecture and engineering firm to program and design a new animal control shelter for Miami-Dade County. The conceptual design below courtesy of LIVS.

Montgomery County Animal Resource Center  Dayton, OH

Pahokee Animal Shelter  Pahokee, Florida  
Pahokee is located on Lake Okeechobee in the western most part of Palm Beach County, Florida. A new shelter was scheduled to replace an existing facility which is outdated but the project has been placed on-hold (July 2007) pending funding. The location presents several challenges including muck on the site, mosquito control and air quality concerns from burning sugar cane fields.

PAWS of Carteret County  Morehead City, NC  
The Pet Adoption and Welfare Society (PAWS) of Carteret County needed a home of its own. Property was leased for 99 years and an existing office building was donated, relocated and renovated to become the Gunhilda Brandt Building completing Phase I of the project. The building houses administrative functions giving the organization the opportunity to create a better brand identity and a sense of place. Bacon Group served as the architect of record working under Bob Worthington, the local construction manager. Phase II of the project will be to construct a facility specifically to house animals for adoption.

Pet Showcase of Homes  AIA Tampa Bay  
The design team of Bacon Group and Hennessy Construction Services won an Award of Honor for Outstanding Design & Craftsmanship from the AIA Tampa Bay for the design of "Luck-Y Dog," the team's entry in the 2003 Pet Showcase of Homes. The Luck-Y Dog brought the highest price of any entry during the charity auction to benefit the local Humane Society.

Pinellas County Animal Services Shelter and Adoption Center  Largo, FL  
The Pinellas County Animal Services Shelter and Adoption Center is the largest animal shelter designed by Bacon Group. The animal services department serves a suburban population of 925,000 people.

Saratoga County Animal Services  Balston Spa, NY  
Bacon Group served as the animal shelter design consultant for a needs assessment, conceptual design, and preliminary cost estimate for a new animal shelter to serve Saratoga County and surrounding areas in upstate NY.

South Lake Animal League Shelter  Lake County, FL  
The design for the South Lake Animal League features a generous porch and clerestory windows in a vaulted lobby.
